Speaking Module 1

Part 1 จะเป็นคำถามทั่ว ๆ ไปเกี่ยวเกี่ยวกับตัวเอง ครอบครัว งาน การเรียน สิ่งที่เราสนใจ
Part 2 ให้พูดในหัวข้อที่กำหนด เราจะมีเวลาเตรียมตัวหนึ่งหน้าทีก่อนจะพูด และพูดประมาณหนึ่งถึงสองนาที
หลังจากนั้นเค้าก็จะถามเราต่ออีกหนึ่งถึงสองคำถาม
Part 3 เราจะพูดคุยกับผู้คุมสอบในหัวข้อที่เกี่ยวเนื่องกับ part ที่แล้ว

ใน Part ที่ 1 เป็นส่วนที่เตรียมตัวได้ง่ายที่สุดเพราะเป็นเรื่องที่ใกล้ตัวเรามาก ๆ
เพราะฉะนั้น ต้องพยายามนึกคำถามต่าง ๆ ให้ครอบคลุมมากที่สุด และลองซ้อมตอบล่วงหน้า
ตัวอย่างคำถาม เช่น

1. Please describe yourself.
2. Please describe your family.
3. Please describe your home.
4. Please describe some of your interests.
5. Please describe your job.
6. Please describe your studies

เราควรจะซ้อมตอบคำถามเหล่านี้ให้คล่องที่สุด จะได้ไม่เสียเวลา มานึกตอนที่จะต้องตอบ และยังทำให้เรามั่นใจในคำตอบมากขึ้นด้วย

สวัสดีค่ะ คาดว่าเวลานี้หลายๆท่านคงกำลังคร่ำเคร่งกับการเตรียมสอบ IELTS เชื่อว่าสิ่งที่สร้างความหนักใจให้กับหลายๆท่านพอสมควรคือ Writing part หรือการเขียน โดยเฉพาะ Essay writing หรือการเขียนเรียงความนั่นเอง ประโยคยอดฮิตที่นักเรียน นักศีกษาไทยมักพูดเสมอคือ "ภาษาอังกฤษไม่แข็งแรง" "เวลาน้อย กลัวเขียนไม่ทัน" ต่อไปนี้เราต้องสลัดความกลัวทิ้งไป แล้วเริ่มต้นบอกกับตัวเองใหม่ว่า "เราทำได้"

คราวก่อน ได้นำเสนอภาพรวมของโครงสร้าง essay เพื่อให้ท่านผู้อ่านได้มีความรู้ความเข้าใจเบื้องต้น เกี่ยวกับส่วนประกอบหลัก และการจัดระเบียบความคิดในการเขียน ครั้งนี้ จึงขอเสนอขั้นตอนการเขียนขั้นแรกที่สำคัญมาก นั่นก็คือ Analysing the topic (การวิเคราะห์หัวข้อ)


1) Analysing the Topic (การวิเคราะห์หัวข้อ)

ขั้นตอนนี้เป็นขั้นตอนที่ต้องทำเป็นอันดับแรกในการเขียน essay และเป็นขั้นตอนที่มีความสำคัญมาก ผู้เข้าสอบจะได้รับโจทย์ซึ่งเป็นหัวข้อของเรื่องที่จะต้องเขียน เพื่อให้ตอบคำถามได้ตรงประเด็น ผู้เข้าสอบจำเป็นอย่างยิ่งที่จะต้องตีความหมายของโจทย์ให้แตก

หัวข้อ essay มีส่วนประกอบหลัก 3 ประการคือ

1) the instruction about what to do
(คำสั่งว่าผู้เข้าสอบต้องทำสิ่งใด)
2) the key words indicating the topic
(คำสำคัญที่ชี้บ่งว่า essay นั้นเกี่ยวกับเรื่องใด)
3) the words restricting the topic and indicating what aspect of the topic should be dealt
with
(คำที่จำกัดขอบเขตของหัวข้อ และชี้บ่งว่าผู้เข้าสอบจะต้องตอบคำถามในลักษณะใด และทิศทางใด)


1.1) Instructions

จงอ่านและพิจารณาหัวข้อต่อไปนี้อย่างระมัดระวัง:

a) Describe the role of computers in modern society.

b) The environment is the most important issue in the world today. Discuss.

คำใคคือคำที่แสดงคำสั่ง (instruction words)?

ใน a) instruction word คือ describe และใน b) คือ discuss คำ 2 คำนี้เป็นคำที่แสดงลักษณะหลัก 2 ลักษณะของ essay ที่ผู้เข้าสอบอาจต้องเขียน

ถ้าท่านถูกสั่งให้ describe สิ่งที่ท่านต้องนำเสนอใน essay ของท่านคือ ข้อเท็จจริง (facts) ไม่ใช่ความคิดเห็น (opinions) ในทางกลับกัน หากท่านถูกสั่งให้ discuss ท่านจะต้องแสดงความคิดเห็น และอภิปรายเห็นด้วย หรือไม่เห็นด้วยกับประเด็นนั้น

เมื่อเข้าใจความแตกต่างของ 2 คำนี้แล้ว เรามาลองทำแบบฝึกหัดกันเลยค่ะ อย่าเพิ่งดูเฉลยนะคะ ^_^

Exercise 1.1.1

Look at the following topics and their instruction words, and list them under either 'describe' or 'discuss'.

a) Explain the importance of computers in the world today.

b) Computers may be considered the most important tool in modern society.
Do you agree?

c) What is your opinion of the statement that computers are indispensable in
the modern world?

d) Do you consider computers to be indispensable in the modern world?

e) Outline the major effects that computers have had on modern businesses.

โดยปกติแล้วโจทย์มักจะไม่แสดง instruction word ออกมาตรงๆ แต่จะบอกเป็นนัยๆ (imply) เพื่อให้ผู้เข้าสอบได้ใช้วิจารณญาณในการตีความคำสั่งจากโจทย์

Exercise 1.1.2

Consider the following topics and decide whether they belong to the discuss or the describe category.

a) To what extent are computers essential in modern society?

b) Write an essay on the following topics: Computers have been the most

important development in modern times.

c) Present an argument or a case for educated readers on the following topics:

Parents should control the amount of television that their children watch.

d) The effects of computers in education.

e) The role of television as an educational medium.



1.2) key words

เป็นคำที่ชี้บ่งกว้างๆว่า essay นั้นเกี่ยวกับเรื่องใด เช่น

Education
The Environment
Population
Computers
Culture and Society
Television
Health


1.3) The aspect of the topic

เมื่อตีความได้แล้วว่าหัวข้อที่จะต้องเขียนเป็นเรื่องเกี่ยวกับอะไร (key word) ขั้นตอนต่อไปที่ต้องทำคือตีความจากหัวข้อนั้นให้แคบลง และละเอียดยิ่งขึ้นว่าโจทย์ต้องการคำตอบในลักษณะใดและทิศทางใด ซึ่งขั้นตอนนี้เป็นขั้นตอนที่ต้องระมัดระวังอย่างมาก เนื่องจากมีผู้ตีความผิดบ่อยครั้ง

Consider the following topics:

a) Computers have provided great benefits to modern society. Discuss.

b) Computers are the most important invention of the century. Do you agree?

c) Modern society would not be able to operate without computers. Do you

agree?

ทั้งหมดนี้ key words ที่ชี้บ่งหัวข้อคือ 'computers' และ 'their importance in modern society' ('ความสำคัญของคอมพิวเตอร์ในสังคมยุคใหม่) แต่ทว่า แต่ละหัวข้อมีประเด็นคำถามที่ต่างกันดังนี้

a) have provided great benefits
b) are the most important invention
c) would not be able to operate without

ดังนั้น เพื่อให้ตอบคำถามได้อย่างตรงประเด็น ผู้เข้าสอบจึงต้องอ่านโจทย์ และพิจารณาให้ถี่ถ้วนว่าโจทย์ต้องการคำตอบลักษณะใด

Exercise 1.3.1

Test your ability to interpret topics by identifying which of the following basically ask the same question, even if the wording is different.

a) Tertiary education is of greater benefit to the individual than to the
society. Discuss.

b) How important is the home background in influencing a child's
educational success?

c) Tertiary education should be free because it benefits the whole society.
Do you agree?

d) The home has a greater influence on a child's ultimate success than the
school. Discuss.

e) The attitude of parents is more important than the quality of the school in
determining children's success.

f) Tertiary education is the key to a successful career.

g) Discuss the relative influence of the home and the school on a child's
intellectual and social development.

h) Can modern science and technology solve the problem of feeding the entire
population of the world?

i) Feeding the world's growing population is our greatest social problem. Do
you agree?

j) Discuss the argument that the problem of feeding the world's growing
population is only one of distribution, since there are adequate resources
available through science and technology to supply everyone's basic needs.

โครงสร้างของ Essay

โดยทั่วไปแล้ว Essay ประกอบด้วย 3 ส่วนหลักคือ
Introduction
Body (supporting point (s) )
Conclusion

1) Introduction หมายถึงคำนำ คือการเปิดเรื่อง มีจุดประสงค์ให้ผู้อ่านได้ทราบถึงเรื่องหรือประเด็นหลักที่ผู้เขียนต้องการนำเสนอ และจุดยืนของผู้เขียนในการนำเสนอประเด็นย่อยต่างๆที่ทำหน้าที่ support ประเด็นหลัก ในประโยคแรกของ Introduction จะเริ่มด้วย general statement คือการกล่าวถึงประเด็นที่จะเขียนแบบกว้างๆก่อน แล้วจึงย่อยประเด็นนั้นในแคบลงในประโยคต่อไป หลังจากนั้นจึงกล่าวถึงประเด็นย่อยที่ผู้เขียนต้องการนำเสนอเป็นข้อๆ

ตัวอย่าง: To what extent are computers essential in modern society?

It is amazing to realize that computers have only been in common use for the last ten years or so. The invention of personal computers has had such a major effect on modern society that it is almost impossible to imagine life without them. Business, education and entertainment have all been significantly affected. It is clear now that both business and education would be unable to function without them, but there are many people who would argue that their role in entertainment is not so beneficial.

จากตัวอย่าง จะเห็นได้ว่าประโยคแรก "It is amazing to realize that computers have only been in common use for the last ten years or so". ทำหน้าที่เป็น general statement คือจะเปิดเรื่องแบบกว้างๆ ส่วนประโยคที่ 2 "The invention of personal computers has had such a major effect on modern society that it is almost impossible to imagine life without them". คือประเด็นที่แคบลง ย่อยลงมาจากประโยคแรก และเริ่มนำผู้อ่านเข้าประเด็นหลักที่ต้องการนำเสนอ ซึ่งก็คือ "ความสำคัญของคอมพิวเตอร์ในสังคมปัจจุบัน" ส่วนประโยคถัดมา "Business, education and entertainment have all been significantly affected... " เป็นประเด็นที่แคบลงมาจากประโยคที่ 2 และบอกให้ผู้อ่านได้ทราบถึง 3 ประเด็นย่อยที่จะนำเสนอในส่วนของเนื้อหา (body) ใน essay นี้ (business, education and entertainment) เพื่อ support ประเด็นหลักให้มีน้ำหนักมากขึ้น

ดังนั้น ถ้าสังเกตให้ดี จะเห็นว่า Introduction มีลักษณะคล้ายรูปกรวย คือจะเริ่มจากกว้างไปแคบจนถึงแคบที่สุด (general to specific)


2 ) Body หมายถึงเนื้อเรื่อง หรือประเด็นย่อยที่ผู้เขียนต้องการนำเสนอเพื่อ support สิ่งที่ประเด็นหลักอ้างถึง โดยทั่วไปแล้ว body จะมีประมาณ 3 paragraphs และแต่ละ paragraph จะนำเสนอประเด็นหลักเพียง 1 ประเด็นเท่านั้น แต่ละ paragraph จะเริ่มต้นประโยคแรกด้วย topic sentence ประโยคต่อมาจะทำหน้าที่ support ประเด็นที่อ้างใน topic sentence ซึ่งอาจเขียนในรูปแบบของคำอธิบาย หรือ ตัวอย่างประกอบก็ได้

The business world is becoming increasingly competitive, and for that reason speed is very important. To be able to satisfy clients and customers, it is necessary to exchange information as quickly as possible. Without computers, all business transactions take a long time. Accounting is slow, finding the right information is slow, and communicating is slow. With the invention of computers, accounting programs are professionally designed and easy to use, information can be stored and retrieved almost instantly and it can be communicated right across the world in seconds.

Education also benefits from the ability of computers to store and communicate vast amounts of information. Scientists use computers for calculations that would have been impossible to even think of before. Students often find educational computer programs more stimulating than other forms of teaching.

Perhaps most young people still think of computers mainly as a source of games. Parents and educators often worry that children who spend many hours playing games on computers are not learning to socialize with each other, or to develop creative skills. The invention of "virtual reality" seems even more dangerous, because it seems to mean that actual reality is not being faced and learnt about.

จากตัวอย่าง จะเห็นได้ว่าทั้ง 3 ประโยคที่พิมพ์ด้วยตัวหนาคือ topic sentence หรือประโยคที่เป็นใจความหลักของแต่ละ paragraph ครอบคลุมใจความย่อยของประโยคที่ตามมาใน paragraph นั้นๆ ซึ่งประเด็นหลักของทั้ง 3 paragraphs คือ business, education และ entertainment ตามลำดับ ทั้ง 3 ประเด็นนี้ทำหน้าที่ support ประเด็นที่ใหญ่ที่สุดที่ผู้เขียนต้องการนำเสนอ ซึ่งก็คือ "essence of computers in modern society" หรือ "ความสำคัญของคอมพิวเตอร์ในสังคมปัจจุบัน" นั่นเอง

ส่วนประโยคที่ต่อมาจาก topic sentence ในแต่ละ paragraph ก็คือการอธิบายความเพิ่มเติมจาก topic sentence นั่นเอง


3) Conclusion หมายถึงบทสรุป ซึ่งไม่จำเป็นต้องยาว ผู้เขียนอาจสามารถสรุปประเด็นทั้งหมดได้ใน 1 ประโยค ข้อสำคัญคือ บทสรุปจะต้องครอบคลุมทุกประเด็นที่ได้กล่าวมาแล้ว แต่มิใช่เพียงการกล่าวซ้ำจากประเด็นนั้นๆ เพราะจะทำให้ essay นั้นน่าเบื่อ ดังนั้น เราอาจให้ความคิดเห็นเพิ่มเติม หรือข้อเสนอแนะที่เป็นประโยชน์ เพื่อให้ essay นั้นน่าสนใจยิ่งขึ้น

I would argue that while computers are clearly essential in the running of business and for scientific and educational advances, their use as a source of entertainment is actually harmful and should be controlled.

จากตัวอย่างจะเห็นได้ว่าบทสรุปนี้ได้กล่าวยืนยันประเด็นหลักที่ต้องการนำเสนอ ว่าคอมพิวเตอร์มีความสำคัญกับสังคมปัจจุบัน ทั้งในด้านธุกิจ (business), การศึกษา (education) และบันเทิง (entertainment) แต่ส่วนที่เพิ่มเติมมาคือความคิดเห็นของผู้เขียนเกี่ยวกับอันตรายของคอมพิวเตอร์ในด้านบันเทิง และเป็นสิ่งที่ควรดูแลควบคุมนั่นเอง

ถ้าสังเกตให้ดี จะเห็นว่า conclusion มีลักษณะคล้ายกับ introduction คือครอบคลุมทุกประเด็นที่นำเสนอ แต่ต่างกันตรงที่ว่า introduction เป็นการนำเสนอจากประเด็นกว้างไปหาประเด็นแคบ (general to specific) ส่วน conclusion เป็นการนำเสนอจากประเด็นแคบไปหาประเด็นกว้าง (specific to general)

สำหรับเทคนิค กำปั้นทุบดิน.. แบบหนึ่งที่ใช้ในการเตรียม Writing คือการเขียนตาม essay ที่ได้คะแนนดี ๆ ฝึกเขียนตามทุกวัน เพื่อให้ชินกับสำนวน รูปประโยคที่ใช้บ่อย ๆ แล้วค่อยลองเขียนเองจากโจทย์อื่น ๆ

วิธีการ download
